Boards of Canada announce first album in 13 years, ‘Inferno’

Ambient duo Boards of Canada have followed up their first new song in 13 years with the announcement of a new album, Inferno, slated for release on May 29th, 2026.

News of their return was picked up by way of a poster campaign, spotted by fans around London, New York, California, and Shibuya.

A month ago, the band also mailed fans VHS tapes, which included their signature hexagonal logo. Reportedly, the tapes contained audio from an ad for a Christian Bible school magazine that was discontinued in 1991.

It is not yet clear why they included this sample, as the Scottish brothers have given curiously little information alongside the announcement of their forthcoming 18-track project.

The first single released unceremoniously on YouTube was called ‘Tape 05’; as per the newly-released tracklist, this might end up being the song ‘Father And Son’ off the record, but it is yet to be confirmed by the musicians or their team.

Boards of Canada last released a full-length project in 2013; Tomorrow’s Harvest followed up eight years of silence following 2005’s The Campfire Headphase.

The band, formed by Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin, became a defining act for Warp Records during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Fans, new and old, can get their hand on the May release in several formats, including a special edition limited red translucent 2LP vinyl in a triple gatefold sleeve with a 16-page booklet, standard black 2LP vinyl, and the classic CD and digital formats.
