Sydney Sweeney responds to ‘Christy’ suffering poor start at the box office

Sydney Sweeney has responded to the poor start her latest film Christy has suffered at the box office, where it grossed only $1.3 million over its opening weekend in North America.

The actor took to Instagram on November 10th to heap praise on the biopic of boxer Christy Martin, lauding the work of its director David Michôd before adding that she was “so deeply proud of this movie”.

Sweeney went on to explain: “This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. Through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives,” noting that the “experience has been one of the greatest honours of my life.”

Despite the Euphoria star saying she was “proud” as “we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact”, the film has suffered one of the worst box office openings in history with its earnings, according to statistics from Box Office Mojo.

The lacklustre response could be attributed, in part, to the controversies which have swirled around Sweeney in recent months, namely her “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” campaign for American Eagle. The heat intensified on this after it was alleged that the actor is a registered Republican voter, prompting Donald Trump to weigh in and support her.

Breaking her silence for the first time on the matter in a recent interview with GQ, Sweeney said the experience of being backed by the US president was “surreal”.

Elsewhere in the same interview, the actor explained that she took on the role of playing Martin as she “definitely can relate” to the themes of domestic violence which are explored throughout the film.

Christy is set for release in UK and Ireland cinemas on November 28th.
