Sydney Sweeney admits she “definitely can relate” to the domestic violence themes in ‘Christy’

Sydney Sweeney has admitted that she “definitely can relate” to the themes of domestic violence which appear in her latest film, Christy

The biopic stars Sweeney as the titular Christy Martin, the prolific American female boxer who rose to prominence in the 1990s. However, it also deals with the sportswoman’s troubled life outside the ring, most notably her attempted murder by her ex-husband James V Martin in 2010.

Given the extremely sensitive themes which are apparent in the film, Sweeney has said the project has been “very personally special to me and important” in a new interview with GQ, while opening up on how she connects with such issues.

Noting how, during the process of working with the real Martin to create the film, the actor realised how much they had in common, Sweeney explained: “When other women watch Christy, I hope that they walk away and they might either find strength within themselves or be able to be a voice for somebody else.”

When asked further on what the similarities between herself and Martin are, the Euphoria star responded: “She is fighting a fight in her home life, and she’s also fighting a fight in the public. And I think that, for me, I find myself in a lot of battles both in front and not in front of the world. So I definitely can relate.”

Sweeney’s regular connection with domestic abuse awareness was also then highlighted, between Christy and her next film The Housemaid, to which she responded: “I always speak out about something that is important to me. And for me to speak out, I use art. Through my characters in my movies, it’s a way for me to be able to do my part and spread awareness in different ways through my characters. That’s how I’ve always learned to communicate, and it’s really important.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the actor also finally addressed her major controversy from earlier this year with her American Eagle advertisement campaign, the response to which she said was “surreal”.

Christy is set to be released in cinemas on November 7th, 2025.
