Sydney Sweeney says Donald Trump’s intervention in American Eagle controversy was “surreal”
Sydney Sweeney has finally opened up on her controversial American Eagle jeans campaign.
The actor has said it was “surreal” to be swept up in a world of political crossfire following interventions from Donald Trump and JD Vance regarding the advert.
Sweeney made her first comments on the issue during her latest interview with GQ, months after she came under fire for her advertising campaign with the clothing company, which ran with the slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”, prompting backlash that it alluded to eugenics.
When directly asked about her feelings towards the campaign, Sweeney replied flatly: “I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
A further element of the controversy was sparked when it was alleged that the Euphoria star is a registered Republican voter, leading to Trump and Vance to weigh into the conversation. Trump offered his support by saying: “She’s a registered Republican? Now I love her ad.”
Sweeney admitted that this response from the highest branch of American political office was “surreal”, but quickly countered this by adding: “I wasn’t thinking of it like that, of any of it. I kind of just put my phone away. I was filming every day. I’m filming Euphoria, so I’m working 16-hour days and I don’t really bring my phone on set, so I work and then I go home and I go to sleep. So I didn’t really see a lot of it.”
Moreover, although widespread reports suggested that American Eagle’s sales had downturned as a result, the opposite was actually found to be the case. As such, Sweeney hit back at these claims by stating: “It was all made up, but nobody could say anything because [the company was] in their quiet period. So it was all just a lot of talk. And because I knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans, it didn’t affect me one way or the other.”
Sweeney’s latest film Christy is set to be released on November 7th, meanwhile her other current movie, The Housemaid, will hit cinemas on December 19th in the United States.
