Donald Trump praises Sydney Sweeney’s advert for American Eagle: “She’s a registered Republican? Now I love her ad”
President Donald Trump has praised the new American Eagle advert, starring Sydney Sweeney, following reports that the Euphoria actor is a registered Republican voter.
Last week, American Eagle teamed up with Sweeney for a new campaign, Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, which plays on “jeans” and “genes”. In the clip, she says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour.”
At the end of the video, Sweeney notes, “My jeans are blue”, before a narrator says, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
The campaign has since ignited a culture war with JD Vance rushing to American Eagle’s defence after the company were accused of promoting eugenics in the advert. The Vice President said on an appearance on the Ruthless podcast, “My political advice to the Democrats is continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi. That appears to be their actual strategy.”
Over the weekend, it was reported that Sweeney registered as a Republican in Florida in June 2024 shortly after purchasing a property in the Keys, which was later confirmed by The Guardian on Sunday.
While speaking to reporters in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on August 3rd, Trump was questioned about Sweeney’s political leanings and the controversy surrounding the American Eagle campaign, to which he replied, “She’s a registered Republican? Now I love her ad.”
“Is that right? Is Sydney Sweeney,” Trump added. “You’d be surprised how many people are Republicans. That’s one I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that.”
Amid the backlash to the American Eagle advert, the company have seen their stock prices soar, and they have defended the campaign, sharing in a statement on August 1st: “Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Sweeney is yet to comment on reports of her political affiliation with the Republican Party and has never endorsed Donald Trump publicly.
