Shane MacGowan returns home after lengthy hospital stay

After a lengthy and worrying stay in the hospital, The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has been allowed to return home.

MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, shared the positive news on Twitter. Posting a picture of The Pogues vocalist sitting upright in bed wearing a hat and scarf, she wrote: “Shane got out of the hospital!”

She continued: “We are deeply and eternally grateful to all of the doctors and nurses and staff at St Vincent’s; it’s the best! And special thanks to Tom Creagh and Brian Corscadden for your help.”

The latest news follows Clarke sharing a health update on Instagram on November 11th, where she expressed “terrifying fears of loss” with regards to her husband. She wrote: “Sometimes when you love very deeply you will find yourself facing terrifying fears of loss that can feel so big and devastating that you don’t know how you can survive them and you can’t imagine life without this person that you love.”

Then, on November 14th, Clarke provided another update on her husband’s status. On Twitter, she wrote that Peter ‘Spider’ Stacy and Terry Woods, two former members of The Pogues, had been to visit their old friend in hospital. “Love and prayers for everyone who is struggling right now. Hang in there,” she said.

MacGowan was rushed to an intensive care unit in July this year. This followed the news of him being hospitalised in December 2022 with a brain infection, Encephalitis. However, things turned positive last week when Clarke informed the public that The Pogues man was “feeling much better”.

On November 17th, she wrote on Twitter: “Shane is feeling much better today! I am so grateful to everyone who is willing him to get home for Christmas!”
