
‘Zoinks!’: Netflix finds its Velma, Shaggy and Fred for ‘Scooby-Doo’ live-action
The Scooby-Doo Netflix series has officially confirmed its Mystery Incorporated gang, announcing on-the-rise actors set to play Velma, Shaggy, and Fred.
As per Variety, Maxwell Jenkins will play group leader Fred Jones; Jenkins previously starred in Netflix’s three-season reboot of Lost in Space as well as the original Netflix series, Sense8.
Up next, Tanner Hagen has been cast as Norville ‘Shaggy’ Rogers. Hagen is familiar with the world of TV, having acted in the HBO Max series, The Pitt, as well as Lawmen: Bass Reeves. He will also appear in the film The Man Who Changed the World.
Playing Velma Dinkley, Abby Ryder Fortson will also appear as a central figure in the Netflix live-action. She also performed in the HBO Max series, The Pitt. Other television credits include Tales From the Loop, Togetherness, and Transplant.
Fortson is also known for her performances on the big screen, notably in the two Ant-Man Marvel movies, as well as in the comedy Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret opposite Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates.
The official log-line of the reboot shares, “During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy (Hagen) and Daphne (Grace) get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.”
As such, the series will explore the origins of the famous detective gang; “Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma (Fortson), and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy (Jenkins), they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
Midnight Radio’s Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg. The pair is best known for their work on the anime series Cowboy Bebop.
It was previously announced that McKenna Grace landed the role of Daphne, which the actor celebrated with a heartfelt post on Instagram that read, “Oh my jeepers! I can’t believe life is real. I could cry all over again just looking at this announcement. So thankful, SO excited.”
The actor also recently landed the role of Maysilee Donner in the upcoming dystopian thriller, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
