‘Scary Movie’ reboot release has been set for June 2026

After the Wayans brothers announced their Scary Movie reboot, the film has been scheduled for a cinema release on June 12th 2026.

The brothers are reuniting for the first time in 18 years to create an original script for an additional instalment to their hit horror franchise, working with Rick Alvarez to write and produce the film.

Scary Movie was one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time, a slasher parody that mocks the conventions of the genre as it follows a group of teenagers who are stalked by a serial killer. The film opened with $42.5million at the box office, which was the most successful debut for an R-rated horror film and a Black director at the time. It then sparked a franchise that was created by the Wayans brothers – Marlon, Shawn and Keenen.

Keenen Wayans wrote and directed the first two films, while Marlon and Shawn wrote and starred in the next two. Altogether, the upcoming 2026 film will be the sixth in the franchise.

Miramax is producing the film while it will be distributed by Paramount Pictures, with Marlon Wayans posting about the release of the film on social media with a caption that said “Mark your calendars…”

The creator has previously spoken about their complications with Miramax after the release of their first film, describing Harvey Weinstein’s role in “stealing’ the franchise from his family and how the poor deal did not create a fair foundation for the film’s success.

For Scary Movie 3, Miramax employed the Zucker brothers to direct the ideas created by the Wayans brothers. The brothers were not involved in the fourth or fifth films. “You can’t do Wayans shit without the Wayans, you can try, but eventually, you’re gonna lose a lot of money because what we do is special. We have 200 years of comedy between me, Shawn and Keenan, Damon, Kim. We have a lot of years of excellence of what we do. You can’t just put anybody on them.”
