The Wayans Brothers to reunite for new ‘Scary Movie’
The Wayans Brothers, known for creating the horror parody Scary Movie series, have announced that they are reuniting for a new addition to the franchise.
At CinemaCon earlier this year, the filmmaking brothers shared that they were working on the script for a new Scary Movie sequel, which comes more than a decade after the fifth film in the franchise was released in 2013.
The set of movies is known for their satire of conventional horror tropes, with the first film being released in 2000 and quickly reaching cult classic status. It was one of the highest-grossest films in the United States that year, with overall box office sales of $278million against a budget of $19 million.
Keenen Ivory Wayans co-wrote and directed the first movie, with his brothers Marlon and Shawn being involved as co-writers and staring in the movie. The initial films in the franchise were distributed by Paramount Pictures and produced by Miramax, who will also be handling the release and production of their upcoming film.
While the Wayans brothers will write and produce the next title, the director and release date is still unknown, however it is due to go into production early next year. The plot details have yet to be released, but with the same writers attached to the project from the original films, it’s likely to not differ too wildly from fans expectations.
At this stage, the new cast of the film is also unknown, therefore, it’s not been confirmed whether Anna Faris and Regina Hall who had reoccurring roles in the original franchise will return.
Jonathan Glickman, the CEO of Miramax, said in a statement, “We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise. The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world.”
The announcement was first shared on Marlon Wayans’ Instagram page. He shared a photo of him and the original Ghostface mask alongside the caption, “After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the Scary Movie franchise!”
The brothers added a joint statement, saying, “We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
The first movie broke box office records for an R-rated movie, and also provided a platform for the Wayans that allowed them to work on projects such as White Chicks and Little Man.
At this stage, a release date for the new Scary Movie is yet to be revealed.
