Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2024: Ozzy Osbourne leads the list of inductees

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees for 2024 have been revealed, and several prominent acts have finally been inducted, including Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne.

Notably, the musical association is located in Cleveland, Ohio, on the banks of Lake Erie. The organisation was founded in 1983 by Atlantic Records boss Ahmet Ertegun, a significant force in the modern music industry. After a long hunt for the perfect city, he settled on Cleveland in 1986, where it has since been home.

Last year, the class of 2023 featured Rage Against the Machine, Willie Nelson, Kate Bush, George Michael, Sheryl Crow, The Spinners and Missy Elliott. In addition, the ‘Musical Excellence Award’ went to Chaka Khan, Bernie Taupin and Al Kooper, with Link Wray and DJ Kool Herc bestowed with the ‘Musical Influence Award’.

As for the ‘Ahmet Ertegun Award’, which celebrates non-performing industry figures, the late producer and presenter of Soul Train, Don Cornelius, was last year’s recipient. He died in 2012.

2024’s year’s class consists of 16 names altogether. The performer category’s inductees are Ozzy Osbourne, Cher, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang and A Tribe Called Quest. The ceremony will be held in Cleveland on October 19th, with a list of performers still to be announced.

Outside of Osbourne, who has previously been inducted as a member of Black Sabbath, the most significant induction is that of Cher, who has been snubbed for years and even commented on it last year, telling Hall of Fame they could “just you-know-what themselves” when appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The ‘Musical Excellence Award’ this year goes to Jimmy Buffett, the MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield. Meanwhile, Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton, the latter originally sang ‘Hound Dog’, which Elvis Presley achieved an era-defining hit with, will receive the ‘Musical Influence Award’. Rounding out the event is the film and TV producer Suzanne de Passe, who takes home the ‘Musical Influence Award’. She is best known for heading up many projects about music history, exploring Motown, the Jackson family and The Temptations.

Oasis, Jane’s Addiction, Eric B. & Rakim, Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey, Sade, and the late Sinéad O’Connor were nominated for induction in 2024 but were unsuccessful in their respective bids.

When Oasis were announced as a nominee in February this year, frontman Liam Gallagher told the Rock Hall to “fuck off”: After the news broke, he wrote on Twitter: “Fuck the Rock n Roll hall of fame its full of BUMBACLARTS LG x”.

Following that, he sat down with The Sunday Times, and expanded on his disdain for the nominees: “As much as I love Mariah Carey and all that, I want to say: do me a favour and fuck off. It’s like putting me in the rap hall of fame, and I don’t want to be part of anything that mentally disturbed.”
