Robert Eggers announces release date for next movie ‘Werwulf’
Although his latest film, Nosferatu, is currently in cinemas, director Robert Eggers has announced the release date of his next movie, Werwulf, set to arrive at the end of 2026.
Currently dominating the box office, Nosferatu has set a new bar for Eggers. Not only has the film received an overwhelmingly positive response from critics, but it has already grossed over $156.8 million worldwide, making it the director’s most successful by this metric to date.
While horror films are often left out of award season accolades, Nosferatu was recently honoured in the Baftas nominees list in a variety of categories which is a good omen with more award shows announcing their nominations shortly.
Whether due to the film’s connection to the well-known story of Dracula, its strong cast of leading actors, or even the popularity clips of the movie have fostered online, Nosferatu has stretched way beyond Egger’s prior reputation, bringing more eyes onto his work.
Clearly, that is something he’s keen to build on, as he’s already announced his next project. Setting a release date on Christmas Day in 2026, his next movie will be titled Werwulf. As a co-written script between himself and Icelandic poet and author Sjón, who he wrote 2022’s The Northman with, it will be another horror movie in keeping with the director’s now signature gothic style.
Little to nothing is known about the project beyond that. It’s in the early stages with no knowledge of casting or plot, it’s simply known that Eggers has once again partnered with Focus Features to release the movie, continuing their career-long relationship. It’s also known that Maiden Voyage’s Chris and Eleanor Columbus are signed on as executive producers.
