Ringo Starr believes he has a “God-given gift” for drumming
The Beatles legend Ringo Starr has declared his drumming to be a “God-given gift”.
Ahead of the release of his new solo album, Long Long Road, on April 24th, Starr has opened up about his creative process, as well as his drumming on the record.
In a new interview with the Associated Press, Starr nonchalantly responded to praise of his work on the drum kit on the new LP, stating, “Well, I’m a good drummer. That’s just a fact of life, I’m not bragging or anything. It’s a God-given gift.”
Reflecting on the early days of his drumming, Starr reminisced, “I had no lessons, and I was lucky in the early ’60s, late ’50s, Liverpool just became the band centre of the world. There was like 100 bands there, and we all just started playing.”
He also opened up about the title track from Long Long Road, explaining, “I was reflecting, that song sort of fitted in, it wasn’t like that was what I was doing, it’s what turned up. I went back to Liverpool and the move from there… just looking at the moves in my life, though I’ve made several left-turns, I’ve made some really great right-turns.”
Starr then revealed he was due to shoot a music video for the aforementioned song, which will be released as a single.
Elsewhere, in the same new interview, Starr gave his review of Paul McCartney’s recent intimate show at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, gushing, “I loved it. I loved him being in a space that small, too. The sound for me too was great because the band was together, and it was reflecting off the walls there… It made you feel like it was a Saturday night.”
He also remembered fondly seeing McCartney previously play at Amoeba Records in Los Angeles, noting, “He’s great at the big arenas but I just love it in that size.”
Meanwhile, last week, Starr, who is now 85 and looks incredible for it, claimed that broccoli was the secret ingredient to reverse the ageing process, saying of his mantra for life, “Peace and love and broccoli.”
Long Long Road is set for release on April 24th, 2026.
