Richard Ashcroft responds to viral video of fan Shazaming his biggest song, ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’
Richard Ashcroft has found himself at the centre of one of the biggest reunions in music history, filling the all-important support slot for Oasis. However, some fans of the Britpop brothers are not familiar with his tunes, which has led to a funny viral altercation that Ashcroft has commented on.
At the first Oasis gig in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, 75,000 people gathered to hear hits like ‘The Masterplan’ and ‘Whatever’ from Liam and Noel Gallagher. Beforehand, Cast performed in the first support slot, and Ashcroft was also performing.
He finished his set with his biggest hit, ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’. The 1997 anthem from his previous band, The Verve, was lost on one fan, who used the Shazam app to identify the song. The moment was captured by someone else in the audience, who posted the video online with the comment “Did they just Shazam the national anthem?” added on top of it.
The star saw and included the video in a post recapping the first two shows on the huge tour. He added the comment, “Day 2 thanks to everyone who came down and gave such beautiful support for my set. If you don’t know it Shazam it, all new fans welcome!”
Oasis have since released an official live recording of ‘Slide Away’ from their first concert in Cardiff, which captures the energy of their performance and Liam Gallagher’s astounding vocals on the classic track, as well as the energy of the crowd.
The next stop on the tour will be Manchester’s Heaton Park, which holds 80,000 people. The Gallagher brothers will once again be joined by Gem Archer, Andy Bell, Bonehead, and Joey Waronker to smash through two hours of their finest tracks from their beloved reportoire.
Since the initial announcement of UK and Irish dates in August of last year, the Gallagher brothers have also confirmed shows in North America, South America, Australia, and now East Asia.
