Rhian Teasdale describes success of Wet Leg as a “mad, freak incident”

Wet Leg vocalist Rhian Teasdale has reflected on the rise of her band, describing it as a “mad, freak incident”.

Upon releasing their debut single, ‘Chaise Longue’ in 2021, Wet Leg immediately rose up the ranks and lived up to the high expectations with their debut album in 2022, which only further cemented their status as rising stars.

In a new interview, Teasdale told People ahead of the Grammys, “It’s just crazy to see your band’s name next to legitimate artists who’ve been in the industry for a long time and who’ve maybe inspired you to make music.”

She then reflected on their rapid rise to fame thanks to their eponymous debut album, which also led to wins at the Grammys and Brit Awards, “We were very much prepared for, ‘The first album was just this mad, freak incident.’”

Now, they are set to return to the Grammys again on February 1st with their second album, the chart-topping Moisturizer.

In addition to being nominated for ‘Best Alternative Music Album’, their single ‘Mangetout’ is shortlisted for ‘Best Alternative Music Performance’, and the artwork is up for ‘Best Album Cover’.

Looking ahead to the ceremony, Teasdale admitted, “We weren’t really expecting that for album two, so it’s just really nice.”

In the same interview, Teasdale also looked back on the group changing their creative process for their second album, becoming a fully-fledged five-piece rather than a duo, sharing, “It’s definitely good being in a band because I think you always are your own worst critic.”

She added, “If it was just me on my own, I’d be like, ‘Is this a stupid idea? Yeah, it probably is,’ and that would be the end of it. So I think it’s really important for encouraging each other.”

In addition to possibly adding to their Grammys haul next month, Wet Leg are set to return to the UK in the summer for a string of huge outdoor shows, including the biggest headline show of their career at Alexandra Palace Park in London on July 10th.
