Quick-fire Questions: 10 minutes with Dutch Interior
What happens when you put six childhood friends in a band? Realistically, you’d expect plenty of bickering, old resentments, and the near-impossible challenge of growing together. But in the case of Dutch Interior, you get something rare and special—you get heaven.
Uniting somewhere between LA and Long Beach when they were only kids, both the fact of how they started and where they started feel essential to the band. As their music merges surf rock indie energy with mix-ins of pure rock and roll, jazz and even dance, it seems to imbue all classic California sounds into one. There’s a kind of laidback ambience to their work that feels like it could only be born of a place like that.
It could only be born from a friendship that runs so deep it has become unconditional. By now, it’s more of a brotherhood than a friendship, built on limitless love and an open, supportive atmosphere for creativity and evolution. Even if the music they were making was rubbish, the sheer encouragement and freedom to create would still be something beautiful.
But luckily, the music is great. As they prepare to release their debut album, Moneyball, a lot more of it is about to come, as well as the band’s first trip over to the UK, a slew of festival appearances and undoubtedly a boom in their notoriety. So, to help you get in there first, so you can say you were a fan before the rest, we got the need-to-know info about the band, like their karaoke songs of choice and their dinner plans.
Quick-fire Questions with Dutch Interior:
Dutch Interior: Why the band name? Do you have a particular love for Dutch home decor?
Jack: “While we have nothing against Dutch interior design sensibility, the name actually comes from a series of paintings by Joan Miro. Davis is really good at band names. I think the paintings really capture our vibe.”
That said, if you had unlimited funds, what would your home look like?
Jack: “I would have a funky house that requires a ton of work and is never finished. It would have an unstructured yard (fuck fences) rubbing its back against the forest and plenty of space for gardening. Davis would live at the Four Seasons.”
