Which modern music festival has the highest attendance?

Still mourning the loss of Glastonbury tickets? Me too. As demoralising as the never-ending ticket queue was, the one small consolation of missing out on Worthy Farm this year is avoiding the sizable dent it would have left in your wallet—like so many music festivals these days. Now, imagine the joy of attending a festival of that scale, not only the biggest in the world but also completely free.

No, this isn’t some dreamy fantasy mirage—it’s a real thing. Among the massive music festivals raking in cash from eager attendees, one stands out by refreshingly bucking the trend. The Donauinsel Festival—also known as the Danube Island Festival—in Vienna, Austria, outpaces Coachella and even Rock in Rio as the highest-attended music event in the world. The reason? You don’t have to pay a penny to get in.

Attracting an astonishing 2.5 million festivalgoers on average each year, Donauinselfest is unconventional in more ways than just being free. The festival takes place on a massive floating pontoon in the middle of the Danube River—and yes, it’s safer than it sounds, I promise.

The Donauinsel itself is a huge artificial island which was initially installed as a flood resistance measure but has since taken on the much more interesting role of hosting the world’s biggest music festival in the years since, which takes over just under a quarter of its 21-kilometre length.

Roaring into life every June for a weekend of massive music, the festival mostly hosts Austrian native artists, but also occasionally slots in international acts, with everyone from Bob Geldof to the Backstreet Boys having taken to the stage over the years. It may not have the same level of acclaim as the pinnacle of the Pyramid Stage, but tell any artist there’s a crowd of millions waiting and they’ll surely come running.

Featuring over 300 acts each year over 16 stages, there’s bound to be something for everyone no matter what your musical tastes are. That’s clearly something reflected in the masses of crowds that quite literally pour on to the island for Donauinselfest – 2015 recorded its highest ever attendance of 3.3 million visitors over the course of the weekend, marking this as not only an event of epic proportions but the absolute promise land of musical madness that cannot be missed.

It turns out Billy Joel was right when he said “Vienna waits for you”. He might not have meant it at the time in the context of Donauinselfest, but it certainly befits the description. This is a shining music haven that every fan should pilgrimage to at some point in their lives – and, put it this way, the price of a flight to Vienna is still going to be cheaper than Glastonbury at this point. Imagine if everyone just started flocking to Donauinselfest instead on top of the millions who already do. It might just capsize the barge.
