Pierce Brosnan reveals who he wants to be the next James Bond
Any actor who plays James Bond will be asked questions about both the character and the franchise for the remainder of their careers, but at least Pierce Brosnan has changed his tune by publicly backing an actor he believes would be a perfect fit for the role.
No matter what any former incumbent of the role goes on to accomplish after exiting the long-running spy series, the shadow of Bond continues to loom large, something that some former 007’s have dealt with better than others.
When the question over who could potentially succeed him was put to Daniel Craig, the most recent iteration of cinema’s foremost secret agent responded by saying, “I don’t give a shit who plays James Bond next, as long as they don’t fuck it up.” Brosnan used to be of a similar mindset, but he’s now happy to support one of the clear favourites.
He’s been asked the very same thing before, but at the time his answer was a succinct, “I don’t care.” However, now that all signs are beginning to increasingly point in the direction of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day headliner has thrown his weight behind the current front-runner.
“I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so,” he said on The Ray D’Arcy Show, before recalling the time they worked together on a little-seen 2009 drama. “One of the first movies we made, one of the earliest movies, was The Greatest. And he was the greatest in it.”
Brosnan “would definitely tip my hat to the fellow” were he to end up being named as the next Bond, making him the second ex-007 to grant their blessings to Taylor-Johnson. George Lazenby has already approved of the potential casting, with the ball now lying firmly in the court of Eon Productions as the outfit continues putting the pieces together behind the scenes.
An announcement isn’t expected imminently, but given the way he’s been spoken about so favourably by former Bonds and the rumours that continue to swirl, it would be much more of a surprise at this point if Taylor-Johnson didn’t become the next Bond. There are no guarantees, but at this stage, he’s become the runaway favourite, and has the backing of two 007s to boot.
