Olivia Rodrigo announces third album, ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’
American pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo has announced her third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which is set for release on June 12th.
The 23-year-old singer has revealed little about the album so far, posting the cover art on Instagram today (April 2nd), writing, “I am so proud of this record and I can’t wait for you to hear it.”
Rodrigo’s previous album was 2023’s Guts, which received various Grammy nominations, including ‘Album of the Year’. She she lost out to Taylor Swift’s Midnights.
Still, Guts saw all 12 of its songs hit the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, although it was the hit single ‘Vampire’ which debuted at the top spot.
Enjoying a career as a Disney star as a child, Rodrigo made the transition to a more serious musical career in 2021 when she released the single ‘Drivers License’, which went viral on TikTok.
Following it with tracks ‘Deja Vu’ and ‘Good 4 U’, the singer quickly rose to become one of pop’s most talked-about acts, dropping her debut album, Sour, shortly after.
Rodrigo has established herself as a go-to collaborator to the stars over the past few years, sharing the stage with the likes of No Doubt, David Byrne, and Robert Smith for covers of their own classic tracks. In fact, Smith recently revealed (via British Vogue), that he is a huge fan of her songs and they’ve even made some music together.
“Although most of the songs on those two albums are not really ‘aimed at my demographic’, they are all so good that it is hard not to fall in love with them,” The Cure’s vocalist said.
He admitted that they have “enjoyed a couple of memorable nights in the studio together,” fuelling rumours that there could be a potential collaboration between the two on Rodrigo’s third record, but there has been no confirmation of this to date.
We can assume that the record will continue to explore Rodrigo’s interest in slightly more alternative sounds, as reflected by her use of punk aesthetics and guitar riffs on her previous two albums. However, the cover of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love features Rodrigo swinging upside down in a pink dress against a bright blue sky, which seems to be a visual departure from her previous adoption of dark purple.
