The Cure’s Robert Smith has been in the stuido with Olivia Rodrigo
The Cure frontman Robert Smith has expanded on his unlikely friendship with Olivia Rodrigo, revealing that the pair have shared several “memorable” nights in the studio together.
The pair took to the stage together when Smith appeared as a special guest during Rodrigo’s headline set at Glastonbury Festival last year.
Together, they performed fan-favourite The Cure tracks, ‘Friday I’m In Love’ and ‘Just Like Heaven’. Pictures of the friends doing shots together backstage subsequently went viral.
At that time, the ‘Get Him Back’ singer introduced Smith as “perhaps the greatest songwriter to come out of England” and “a personal hero of mine.”
Additionally, she added that Smith is “the coolest, nicest, most wonderful man in the world. And I’m so honoured to play with him.”
Smith appears to be dishing out the compliments right back. In a new interview with Rodrigo for British Vogue, he shared his opinion on Rodrigo’s stardom.
Smith recalled becoming a fan through one of her first singles, the ballad ‘Drivers License’. Following this discovery, Smith revealed, he “bought Sour, and then Guts (both on CD!).”
He went on, “Although most of the songs on those two albums are not really ‘aimed at my demographic’, they are all so good that it is hard not to fall in love with them.”
Smith then made the admission that the two have remained friends since their triumphant Glastonbury moment: “She calls me up quite a bit to talk about clothes and fashion,” he revealed.
Smith added, “We have enjoyed a couple of memorable nights in the studio together… I can’t wait to hear what she does next!”
Olivia Rodrigo’s next album will follow 2023’s Guts. So far, no title or release date has been confirmed for the follow-up project, which was recorded at the end of 2025.
