David Byrne releases cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Driving License’
In celebration of a musical milestone, Olivia Rodrigo has announced a special anniversary vinyl featuring none other than Talking Heads frontman, David Byrne.
Five years ago, Disney star Rodrigo released her debut ballad, ‘Drivers License’, which quickly went viral and laid the foundations for her to become a star. As a result, Rodrigo became the youngest person to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100.
Now, Rodrigo has taken to social media to share exactly how she is celebrating the anniversary. She wrote, “SOUR is turning 5 years old this year! And to celebrate, I’m so excited to announce an upcoming series of reimagined SOUR covers from some of my favorite artists ever.”
She continued, “We’re starting off insanely strong with an incredible reworking of ‘Drivers License’ from one of my all-time heroes, David Byrne.”
Praising the ‘This Must Be the Place’ singer, Rodrigo also wrote, “David is nothing short of a legend, and I actually cried when I heard his version of this song.”
Byrne’s version of the heartbreak hit, as well as Rodrigo’s collaborative cover with the musician of ‘Burning Down The House’ from 2025’s Governors Ball, is now available to stream online. Fans can also pre-order a seven-inch vinyl of the songs.
The collaboration at the Governors Ball saw the pair wear coordinated outfits as they danced through a high-energy rendition of the 1983 hit. Recently, the song was also covered by Paramore for the covers album marking the 40th anniversary of Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense live album and concert film in 2024.
Byrne’s cover of ‘Driver’s Licence’ sees the 73-year-old put a dramatic spin on the piano ballad, as he sings above arpeggioed vocal notes. He has also changed the gender of the person referenced in the second verse.
Rodrigo has recently teased that new music might be coming in 2026. Speaking to Nylon, she previously shared, “I won’t say too much, but I think 2026 is going to be a busy year for me.”
