Oasis take crown from The Beatles for best-selling UK studio album of all time
Oasis are officially kings of the UK chart after taking the top spot from The Beatles in the list of the UK’s most popular studio albums of all-time.
Oasis’ second album, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, which was released in 1995, takes the third spot on the all-time best-sellers list, which has been newly released by the Official Charts Company.
Queen’s 1981 Greatest Hits collection remains the biggest seller overall, with 1992’s Abba Gold in second place. The Gallagher brothers are in third, overall, and singer-songwriter Adele is in the fourth spot with her 2011 album, 21.
A decade ago, The Beatles’ 1967 psychedelic album, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, sat in the third spot on the chart. Now, it has fallen to fifth place.
The updated list was released on July 22nd to mark the 70th anniversary of the weekly UK album chart. The new figures show that, in total, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? has pulled in 6.2 million UK chart units.
In comparison, in 2022, Queen’s compilation album made history as the first project to pass seven million UK chart units.
Taking up the last of the top ten spots is Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours in sixth place, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon in seventh place, Michael Jackson’s Thriller in eighth place, Bob Marley and The Wailers’ Legend in ninth place, and Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms in tenth place.
Oasis’ scramble up the charts is likely due to the renewed interest in the band following their worldwide reunion tour.
The biggest fan favourites from across the arena tour hailed from their second album, including ‘Some Might Say’ and ‘Champagne Supernova’.
Additionally, the album includes ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ and the mega-hit ‘Wonderwall’, which recently became an unofficial anthem for the 2026 World Cup.
The subsequent staggering increase in radio play and downloads put ‘Wonderwall’ back in the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since it first charted in 1996.
