Oasis make cheeky song dedication to “the people on the hill”
At their penultimate Heaton Park show, Oasis made a coy reference to the thousands of fans gathering on what has now been named ‘Gallagher Hill’ to watch the show for free.
Throughout their reunion shows so far, Oasis have performed a largely consistent setlist, that has raced through tracks like ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’, ‘Fade Away’ and ‘Supersonic’, ending with a four-song encore that barrels through tracks ‘The Masterplan’, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, ‘Wonderwall’ and, finally, ‘Champagne Supernova’.
Throughout, the Britop brothers tend to make bizarre dedications for a few selected tunes. During their first Heaton Park show, they even dedicated ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’ to Mr Pep Guardiola, Manchester City Football Club manager; in response, a crescendo of boos broke out from a portion of the 80,000 fans watching.
On July 19th, they dedicated ‘Talk Tonight’ to “the ladies” and, two songs later, ‘Little by Little’ to “the lads”. Several songs earlier, before playing ‘Bring It On Down’ from their 1994 album Definitely Maybe, the Gallagher brothers chose to dedicate it to “the people on the hill”.
The dedication is apt, given the lyrics in the song, which describe “the uninvited guest who stays ’till the end /I know you’ve got a problem that the devil sends.” Through this reference, Noel and Liam make it clear that they are aware of the thousands of fans who have been gathering at a nearby vantage point, now termed ‘Gallagher Hill’.
New images shared by Manchester Evening News depict a message that fans have left sprayed on the inside the erected fence. In a bold red, fans have written “Don’t look back in anger,” referencing the fan-favourite tune from their 1995 album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory.
The last time Oasis played together in Heaton Park was at V Festival in 2009; now, they have returned for five nights in their home city, playing to a total of 400,000 fans. The huge operation even led police in the Bury area to issue a dispersal order for Heaton Park and all surrounding areas.
