Manchester crowd boos Oasis at Heaton Park over brave song dedication
Amid their epic return to Manchester’s Heaton Park, Oasis still managed to wind up fans after making a strange song dedication mid-set.
The last time Oasis played together in Heaton Park was at V Festival in 2009; now, they have returned for five nights in their home city, playing to a total of 400,000 fans. The huge operation even led police in the Bury area to issue a dispersal order for Heaton Park and all surrounding areas.
Thirteen songs into the show, the Gallagher brothers played ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’ from their 1997 album Be Here Now. Liam introduced the song with a strange tribute: “I’d like to dedicate this to the greatest manager of all time, Mr Pep Guardiola.”
Guardiola is the Manchester City Football Club boss and was in attendance at the first Heaton Park show. A crescendo of boos broke out from a portion of the 80,000 fans watching. Liam had none of it, retorting playfully, “Who you fucking booing, who you fucking booing?”
The booing eventually turned to laughter as a life-sized cut-out of Guardiola wearing a Manchester City scarf was placed on stage. Later, the real football mogul was seen interacting with the Britpop brothers backstage, as well as various members of their entourage.
This is not the only way the band have negatively impacted fans as of late: According to Lloyds Banking Group, the Britpop brothers have cost fans over £2 million collectively in scams. Lloyds reported that fans on average lost £436 per scam. This is £200 more than the average concert ticket scam loss usually seen by the bank.
Fans who wish they were seeing the musicians live can now listen to an official live recording of ‘Slide Away’ from their first concert in Cardiff, which captures the energy of their performance and Liam Gallagher’s astounding vocals on the classic track.
Oasis will play four more shows at Heaton Park on 12th, 16th, 19th and 20th of July, before heading straight to London’s Wembley Stadium, and eventually up to Edinburgh.
