New Frankenstein trailer finally reveals Jacob Elordi’s hideous transformation
The second trailer for Guillermo del Toro‘s Frankenstein has been released and is told entirely from the monster’s perspective. The monster is, of course, played by Jacob Elordi.
The first trailer focused on Oscar Isaac, who plays Victor Frankenstein, the tortured creator of his own destruction. In the original trailer, he appears in a constant state of turmoil and disarray. “Some of what I will tell you is fact. Some is not. But it is all true,” the first clip begins.
The second trailer is voiced entirely by his monster. He begins, “My maker told his tale. And I will tell you mine.”
His gruff, strained voice continues, “I remember… pieces. Memories of different men. Then I saw it. Your name… Victor Frankenstein. My creator. I demand a single grace from you. If you are not to award me love, then I will indulge in rage.”
Interestingly, the role did not originally belong to Elordi. Andrew Garfield was initially announced for the part, but scheduling conflicts caused by the actors’ strike forced him to vacate his role in Frankenstein. Elordi was drafted in as part of a stacked ensemble cast.
The trailer continues to blend dramatic shots of barren lands with surprised, horrified, and panicked faces. Mia Goth, star of the beloved Pearl trilogy, and two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz round out the core quartet and are featured in the new clip.
Elordi’s monstrous disguise has often been kept in the shadow of shots, and is still cast in darkness, though his form can be glimpsed from second to second by the viewer. The thumbnail for the new trailer on YouTube most obviously depicts the new approach to designing the classic character.
Speaking to Variety about the costumer, Elordi revealed the hefty weight of the costuming. “There’s so many different layers to the costume,” Elordi said. “When he’s born, he’s wearing nearly nothing. His chest is open and his head is high. Then, as he starts to experience pain, as we do as a teenager, he starts to hunch his shoulders. And as an adult, he closes off.”
