Venice 2025: Cast left in tears as Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ receives 13-minute ovation

Venice Film Festival was becoming a bit of a drab affair until Guillermo del Toro put it on the metal slab and fired it with an electric hit in the form of his new movie, Frankenstein.

The audience devoured the movie, and they set about showing their appreciation with a 13-minute ovation at the film’s close that left its cast in tears.

Oscar Isaac, who takes on the role of the titular scientist, and Jacob Elordi, who plays his grotesque construct, were seen to be dabbing away tears following the outpouring of love for the picture.

The Mexican director was seen waving at fans and sharing hugs with his two leading men during the applause. Elordi, in particular, seemed to be overcome with emotion and was comforted by both del Toro and Isaac.

The movie will arrive on Netflix soon and instantly find itself as an award contender. A $120million epic is usually a safe bet for such things, but with del Toro in the director’s chair, and a movie based on Mary Shelley’s gothic masterpiece, things have kicked up a notch.

The gothic sci-fi flick is certainly fighting for the festival’s Golden Lion award for best movie at the event.

Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz and Felix Kammerer are also in the picture, but it is Elordi who found himself devoting the most time to the movie.

Speaking to Variety about the costumer, Elordi revealed the hefty weight of the costuming. “There’s so many different layers to the costume,” Elordi said. “When he’s born, he’s wearing nearly nothing. His chest is open and his head is high. Then, as he starts to experience pain, as we do as a teenager, he starts to hunch his shoulders. And as an adult, he closes off.”
