The movie that sent Pamela Anderson into Hollywood exile: “It’s life or death”

Pamela Anderson has enjoyed one of the most unexpected and delightful comebacks of recent years, with the former Baywatch star ditching the waves and making the transition to acting for the silver screen, a risk that eventually paid off after many rocky years in the industry.

Like many women in Hollywood, Anderson was subject to the exploitative and invasive ways of an industry that clawed its way into the personal lives of those inside it, with many women in the public eye being abused by the spotlight and not viewed as real people. Prying journalists would do anything for a story or image, with Anderson being one of many who were sorely treated by the press and Hollywood at large.

As a result, Anderson’s acting career was not taken very seriously, with the actor now returning to the screen after a long hiatus from the medium, with her last project briefly pushing her away from the spotlight before returning with a bang.

Horror is a widely beloved genre and one that capitalises on the most visceral of human emotions – fear. While there are many horrors that successfully make us bite our nails or grip the edge of our seats, there are some that fizzle away into nothing due to shoddy jump scares and predictable plot lines, one of which is one that Anderson found herself starring in in 2017.

The Institute, directed by Pamela Romanowsky and the disgraced James Franco, follows a woman called Isabel who submits herself to an asylum after the sudden death of her parents. However, she is later subjected to strange experiments that force her to try to escape.

Starring James Franco, Tim Blake Nelson and Pamela Anderson, the film was unfortunately obliterated by critics and fans alike, and sadly did not make the splash that was intended. Perhaps, it could have felt like the end of Anderson’s acting career, with some flops being particularly difficult to recover from. It wasn’t until eight years later that Anderson returned to the screen, with the actor discussing her immediate connection to the script and the impact this project had on her career.

The Last Showgirl is the latest mood piece from Gia Coppola, which follows a showgirl as she comes to terms with the fact that her beloved Las Vegas show will shortly be ending, trying to plan her next act and reconcile with her past. It’s a deeply nostalgic and sensitive film, capturing the glittery highs of this world and one slightly delusional star who looks back fondly on a career path that others look down on.

When discussing the role, Anderson said, “I’ve never read a script that I responded to like that before — no one was sending me anything like this. I read it and I thought, I have to do this. It’s life or death. It’s really important.”

Sometimes, the right stories find us later on in life, with many actors finding a role that was truly meant for them at an unexpected time. This could not be truer for Anderson, with her recent comeback perhaps signalling a new shift in Hollywood that gives second chances to those who haven’t been treated kindly.
