Miles Kane talks working with “incredible” Dan Auerbach on new album ‘Sunlight in the Shadows’
After announcing his new album, Sunlight in the Shadows, and sharing the new single, ‘Love Is Cruel’, Miles Kane has given the lowdown on the project to Far Out.
For the new record, set for release on October 17th, Kane has teamed up with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who took up production duties on Sunlight in the Shadows, and their radiant chemistry shines through on ‘Love Is Cruel’.
In a new interview with Far Out, which will be published in full ahead of Kane performing the final concert at The Leadmill in Sheffield later this month, the Last Shadow Puppets singer proudly said ‘Love Is Cruel’ “means business” and admitted he’s “fucking obsessed” with the new track.
Kane also reflected on his career to date, which he believes has all been leading up to Sunlight in the Shadows, sharing, “This journey we’ve been on for the last 20 years, I feel like, it sounds so cheesy to say it’s all led to this place, but I think musically, and weirdly this whole thing of working with Dan (Auerbach) happened, it’s so natural and it wasn’t planned at all.”
For Kane, ‘Love Is Cruel’ was the obvious choice as his lead single, proudly sharing, “That song felt like that stood out to be the first song to put out because it’s got a bit of that western thing, it’s got a Beatles thing, it’s a bit Puppets-y, it’s all those things we’ve done over the years combined to where you’re at now as a 39-year-old man. That’s what I’ve tried to portray.”
The opportunity to work with Auerbach was also a joyful experience for Kane, who is set to join The Black Keys as their special guest for their UK headline tour next month, noting of the old-school methods they adopted, “It’s the first time us working together and it was an incredible experience. You know, we recorded it all live, which doesn’t really happen a lot these days. You know, we had this amazing band in. It was so much fun to do.”
On Sunlight in the Shadows, Kane was joined by a host of esteemed musicians such as Pat McLaughlin, Daniel Tashian, The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, Tom Bukovac, Cage The Elephant’s Nick Bockrath, and Little Barrie’s Barrie Cadogan. Auerbach also sang backing vocals and played on every track.
Making the new record was refreshingly straightforward with Kane adding, “It happened really quick, which doesn’t really happen, but the songs are so good as well. It’s not like a quick album you’ve bashed out where the songs are half-arsed, it’s got depth, it’s got a classiness and a maturity about it that I feel so proud of.”
In a press release, Auerbach was equally elated by the opportunity to work with Miles, sharing, This record was incredible to make from start to finish. I felt like I gained a life-long friend in Miles. And that doesn’t always happen. When it does, it’s amazing. This is an artist who could potentially make records forever.”
Far Out’s full conversation with Miles Kane will be published before his performance at The Leadmill on June 27th.
