Sheffield venue The Leadmill loses appeal over eviction: “Truly devastated”
Sheffield’s iconic music venue, The Leadmill, has lost its eviction battle and been given three months to leave the premises after an unsuccessful High Court appeal.
The venue has been operating since 1980, welcoming names such as Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Coldplay, The Strokes and The Stone Roses over the years. However, Electric Group owns the 900-capacity venue and served an eviction notice on The Leadmill in March 2022, which has led to a three-year legal battle.
In February, it lost its ongoing eviction court battle with its landlord. In a new update following a High Court appeal, it has revealed that Electric Group will take control of the venue in three months. The ownership group already owns venues in London, Bristol, and Newcastle.
The Leadmill said their “legal challenge was sadly unsuccessful” and claimed the decision will result in the loss of 70 jobs.
They wrote on social media: “We’re truly devastated by this outcome, but we also know hand on heart that we did everything possible to stop The Leadmill being evicted. We have poured our energy, time, love and determination into this fight and we’re immensely proud of our team and the community that stood by us. We walk forward with our heads held high, knowing we gave it our all. That strength and passion will carry us into the next chapter, whatever form it may take.”
The Leadmill then explained that “will be hosting a series of farewell events and celebrations, providing supporters a final chance to experience the venue in its original home”. Full details will be announced in the near future.
They also vowed to “continue fighting for independent music and culture in Sheffield” despite the eviction notice.
The venue added, “We want to reassure everyone who has purchased tickets for the upcoming events: there is no immediate change to our programme of events at other venues across the city and will be in touch with all ticket holders in due course. All tickets remain valid and we are committed to ensuring clear communication and a smooth transition for every event.”
The Leadmill concluded: “We are devastated, but not defeated. This is not the end of The Leadmill’s spirit – it’s a call to action for everyone who believes in the importance of independent culture. We will regroup, rebuild and continue.”
