House Speaker Mike Johnson believes Lee Greenwood should headline Super Bowl instead of Bad Bunny

House Speaker Mike Johnson has joined Donald Trump in condemning the decision to have Bad Bunny headline the Super Bowl.

Johnson, a Republican politician who was appointed as speaker of the House in 2023, is the latest high-profile figure in right-wing American politics to share his disapproval of the decision to have the Puerto Rican rapper perform at the NFL event.

He told Pablo Manríquez when asked in the hallways of the House on October 7th, “I didn’t even know who Bad Bunny was. But it sounds like a terrible decision, in my view, from what I’m hearing.”

Johnson added when asked to elaborate on his stance, “It sounds like he’s not someone who appeals to a broader audience,” seemingly referencing Bad Bunny’s music being in Spanish-language. “And there are so many eyes on the Super Bowl. A lot of young, impressionable children,” he added.

The politician then named a left-field pick as his choice to headline the Super Bowl, stating, “And, in my view, you would have Lee Greenwood, or role models, doing that. Not somebody like this.”

Lee Greenwood, aged 82, is best known for his patriotic anthem, ‘God Bless the USA’, which became a hit song in 1984. Notably, in January, he performed the song at a Make America Great Again rally ahead of Trump being sworn in for his second term.

Earlier this week, during an appearance on NewsMax’s Greg Kelly Reports, Trump revealed that he isn’t familiar with the Puerto Rican rapper, before sharing his disappointment at the NFL’s decision to hire him for the Super Bowl.

The president said: “I never heard of him, I don’t know who he is, I don’t know why they’re doing it, it’s like, crazy.”

Trump continued his tirade, “Then they blame it on some promoter that they hired to pick up entertainment I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, also confirmed that ICE would be in attendance for the Super Bowl, stating, “We’ll be all over that place. We’re going to enforce the law.” Bad Bunny previously revealed he chose to leave the US off his current tour due to the ongoing ICE raids.

Bad Bunny hosted the premiere of Saturday Night Live last weekend and laughed off the criticism of his forthcoming performance, telling viewers, ‘I’m very happy. And I think everyone is happy about it. Even Fox News.”
