The White House responds to ‘Saturday Night Live’ mocking Donald Trump and the FCC

The White House has responded to the opening episode of the 51st season of Saturday Night Live, which mocked Donald Trump and the FCC’s chair, Brendan Carr.

Last month, Carr, who was appointed to his role by Trump, piled pressure on ABC before they briefly suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live from the air by labelling comments made by the host following Charlie Kirk’s death as “sick” and said the host “directly mislead the American public”.

During the cold open of the episode, which aired on October 4th, James Austin Johnson’s version of Trump interrupted the sketch to ensure that the programme wouldn’t “do anything to mean about me”.

Johnson’s character then threatened to unleash “my attack dog at the FCC, Brandon Carr” on Saturday Night Live if they overstepped the mark. Mikey Day was then introduced as Carr to SNL viewers, and corrected Trump over the pronunciation of his name. Trump ended the sketch by ominiously saying, “Remember: Daddy’s watching.”

Now, in response, the White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly: “Reacting to this would require me to waste my time watching it. And like the millions of Americans who have tuned out from SNL, I have more entertaining things to do — like watch paint dry.”

The return of Saturday Night Live was hosted by Bad Bunny, who was recently confirmed to headline the Super Bowl next year.

During his monologue, the Puerto Rican musician joked amid the backlash to the announcement due to his songs being in his native Spanish tongue, “I’m very happy. And I think everyone is happy about it. Even Fox News.”

He also switched up the language of his speech to share his gratitude in Spanish: “Especially all of the Latinos and Latinas in the world here in the United States who have worked to open doors. It’s more than a win for myself, it’s a win for all of us. Our footprints and our contribution in this country, no one will ever be able to take that away or erase it.”

He concluded by joking, “If you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn.”
