Watch Mick Jagger take to the stage at folk night in an Oxford pub
The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger made a surprise appearance at a pub in Oxford this weekend, which saw him lead a sing-song.
Jagger was in Oxford, alongside his partner Melanie Hamrick, on June 7th for a special event held by Oriel College, who were hosting the couple.
Oriel College later shared footage online of Jagger performing in a pub after the ceremony, writing, “Sir Mick Jagger and partner Melanie Hamrick visited Oriel College on Sunday as guests of the Provost and Lady Mendoza. Mick joined students at Evensong and dined at High Table.”
They added, “After dinner and drinks in the SCR a small group went off to the pub where Mick gave an impromptu performance with Rolling Stones keyboard player Matt Clifford and Oriel Politics academic Robert Cheah.”
Jagger, along with Clifford and Cheah, performed a cover of the traditional folk song ‘Handsome Molly’, which The Rolling Stones frontman previously recorded for his solo album, Wandering Spirit, released in 1993.
The performance took place at the Half Moon in St Clements, who were overjoyed to have the famous face participate in their weekly folk night.
A spokesperson for the public house told the BBC, “The Half Moon prides itself on its authentic atmosphere and welcoming community. Our Sunday folk session has been going for many years and is open to everyone – whether you’re a beginner player or an international rock star.”
They proudly added, “You never know what to expect at the Half Moon.”
The Half Moon in Oxford is seemingly the only stage where Jagger will be performing in 2026, despite The Rolling Stones releasing their new album, Foreign Tongues, on July 10th.
However, Jagger does want to tour with the band again. “I’d love to go on tour, I can’t wait,” Jagger shared in a recent interview with BBC Radio 2, before calming fans’ expectations of any imminent announcements, adding, “I don’t think it’s going to be this year, but hopefully it’s going to be as soon as possible.”
The singer’s comments arrived after Keith Richards recently made similar remarks. During an interview with the AP, Richards was asked directly about whether fans “can expect a world tour”, to which he replied, “We can talk next year.”
The Stones’ new album, produced by Andrew Watt, has been previewed with the singles ‘In The Stars‘ and ‘Rough and Twisted’. It is set to boast collaborations with Paul McCartney and Robert Smith, as well as a cover of Amy Winehouse’s ‘You Know I’m No Good’.
