Matt Damon speaks out against ICE following killing in Minnesota

Matt Damon has condemned ICE following the killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota last week.

Good, a mother of three, was fatally shot by ICE official, Jonathan Ross, on January 7th in Minnesota. In the aftermath of her tragic death, protests sparked up across the United States last weekend as disgruntled citizens made their voices heard.

Additionally, at the Golden Globes on January 11th, several prominent Hollywood stars, including Mark Ruffalo, Jean Smart, Wanda Sykes and Natasha Lyonne, wore ‘Be Good’ badges in support of Good.

Damon also wore a ‘Be Good’ badge at the premiere of his new movie, The Rip, in New York on January 13th.

Damon explained the statement, telling USA Today about his fears regarding the current regime, “I think like millions of people around the country, we’re really concerned with what’s going on.”

He continued, “And I think it’s about raising awareness about what’s happening in our cities and on our streets and hopefully will promote a larger discussion about this.”

It comes after Ruffalo expressed a similar sentiment regarding his badge at the Golden Globes, saying on the red carpet, “This is for the people in the United States who are terrorised and scared today. I know I’m one of them. I love this country, and what I’m seeing here happening is not America.”

Another Hollywood star to have protested against ICE in recent days is Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who took to Instagram to share images from a march that took place in New York on January 11th. The Seinfeld actor posted one picture that depicted her holding up a placard, which reads, “Renee Good – ICE Bad”.

Additionally, chart-topping singer Billie Eilish has also condemned the killing. While she added no words of her own, Eilish re-shared a post to her Instagram Stories which called ICE a “terrorist group”. In response, the Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticised Eilish for her comments.

Damon’s new movie, The Rip, is set to arrive on Netflix on January 16th. It reunites him with his longstanding collaborator Ben Affleck, and also stars Teyana Taylor, who recently won a Golden Globe for her performance in One Battle After Another.
