Mark Ruffalo tells ‘Marty Supreme’ star Kevin O’Leary to “STFU” over Billie Eilish criticism for anti-ICE speech

Mark Ruffalo has come to the defence of Billie Eilish against actor Kevin O’Leary, after she said “no one is illegal on stolen land” at the Grammys.

When accepting the award for ‘Song of the Year’ at the Grammys ceremony, the ‘Wildflower’ singer also said, “Fuck ICE,” and highlighted the importance of protest movements. The sentiment has been polarising across the industry.

One such actor speaking up in defence of Eilish’s statement is Mark Ruffalo, who has lashed out at Marty Supreme star, Kevin O’Leary, on Threads.

O’Leary called out Eilish on Fox News, stating, “It’s the first lesson 101 for a celebrity: as you rise up, whether you’re a film star or music star or whatever, shut your mouth, and just entertain.”

In response, Ruffalo used his own rhetoric against him, writing: “Why don’t you STFU.”

Ruffalo’s post continued, “It’s hilarious. You will go on any show and talk shit about any number of things and smugly expect us to listen to you, but you will dig into a real artist that dwarfs anything you dream of doing for actually saying something that resonates with 100’s of millions of people the world over.”

Ruffalo gestured towards Josh Safdie’s A24 box office hit, Marty Supreme, in which O’Leary plays a ruthless, snide businessman. Ruffalo finished his post: “It’s astounding the fantasy double standard Kevin O’Leary lives in. You played yourself well in Marty Supreme.”

Ruffalo has used his platform to speak up against political violence on many occasions. While in attendance at the Golden Globes in January, he wore a ‘Be Good’ pin, in honour of Rennee Good, who was murdered in Minnesota by ICE agents.

Explaining his turn to politics, Ruffalo insisted, “This is not normal anymore, and so I don’t know how I could be quiet…”

O’Leary’s criticism was shared by the likes of Kristi Noem, who deemed the singer “ill-informed” for her comments about ICE, and Elon Musk, who also described her as “such a hypocrite” on X.

President Trump also vented his frustration at artists, like Eilish, using their voice at the Grammys, writing on Truth Social, “The Grammy Awards are the WORST, virtually unwatchable! CBS is lucky not to have this garbage litter their airwaves any longer.”

Eilish’s brother and fellow musician, Finneas, has defended his sister’s speech following the public backlash. On February 4th, Finneas wrote on Threads, “Seeing a lot of very powerful old white men outraged about what my 24 year old sister said during her acceptance speech. We can literally see your names in the Epstein files.”
