Lucy Dacus to donate $10,000 to cover transgender surgeries in wake of Donald Trump’s executive order
Singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus has pledged to donate $10,000 to help those requiring surgery to transition following President Donald Trump’s executive order on gender.
On January 20th, Trump made a ruling which confirmed the United States would only officially recognise two genders going forward. In his first speech since returning to the White House for his second tenure, Trump said, “As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.”
The new ruling has received mass scrutiny. At a National Cathedral prayer service on January 21st, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde said to Trump at the ceremony, “I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared. There are gay, lesbian, transgender children, Democratic, Republican, independent families — some who fear for their lives.”
The new ruling regarding gender means that passports can only include two sexes, and taxpayers’ funds will no longer be used to fund gender-affirming healthcare. Additionally, prisons will be segregated by the sex assigned at birth.
As a result of the executive order, Dacus has taken to X to reveal her plans to help those in need of funding to receive the surgery needed to transition.
“If trans people wanna comment surgery gofundmes, I’m gonna give away 10k in $500 increments until it’s gone, & if other people wanna scroll through and make donations, please do,” she wrote on the social media platform. “The government will never be the source of our validation or protection, we have to do it ourselves.”
Earlier this month, Dacus shared details of her upcoming solo album, Forever is a Feeling. To preview the record, the singer-songwriter also shared two new singles, ‘Ankles’ and ‘Limerance’.
According to Dacus, the record is a personal affair that details her rollercoaster of a love life during that period, stating, “I got kicked in the head with emotions.” She elaborates, “Falling in love, falling out of love.”
Dacus said of her journey that is chronicled in Forever is a Feeling, “You have to destroy things in order to create things. And I did destroy a really beautiful life.”
