Donald Trump names Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone as his “special ambassadors” for Hollywood
Donald Trump has sought help from three of his longstanding celebrity supporters, Jon Voight, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson. Their task is to make Hollywood “stronger than ever before” as “special ambassadors” to the movie capital.
The specifics of their duties remain unclear, yet President-elect Donald Trump announced the new appointments on January 16th via Truth Social. “It is my honour to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone,” he said four days prior to his inauguration, “To be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California.”
Trump continued to describe their role, which remains relatively elusive. He said Hollywood has lost a lot of business in recent years and trusts the three actors to make it better than ever before.
The Republican added: “They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!”
Trump continued: “These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!”
Mel Gibson, whose Los Angeles home was burned down last week in the wildfires, was just as surprised as everyone else when he was appointed in his new role. Gibson was never offered the job and only found out about it when he saw the post on social media.
“I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can,” said Gibson, “Any chance the position comes with an ambassador’s residence?”
Trump seems to refer to Hollywood’s declining state. The industry is yet to recover from the pandemic and strikes that have hit it in recent years. Furthermore, its revenue in 2024 was $8.7 billion, down 3.3 percent from 2023 and 23.5 percent from 2019. However, the specifics of how Gibson, Voight and Stallone intend to change this remains unknown.
Stallone and Voight are yet to comment on their ambassadorial roles.
