Lucy Dacus has shared a “psychotic” punk cover of Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’
You know what they say, as soon as the Halloween pumpkins come down the Christmas songs hit the radio. Well, Lucy Dacus is making sure that the first one you hear is at least punk rock enough to make the transition easy.
The singer has been an ever-present of potential since she arrived on the scene a few years ago. She also debuted an incredible self-titled record with her supergroup boygenius which also featured Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers. Since then she has been doing her best to cover some iconic tracks.
Last month, the boygenius member took on Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight’, she also covered ‘La Vie En Rose’ by Édith Piaf for Valentines Day, and her original song ‘My Mother & I’ for Mothers Day, as well as ‘Dancing in the Dark’ in honour of Bruce Springsteen and her Dad’s birthday.
Today’s cover will appear on a new EP, 2019, which compile all of the holiday-themed covers Dacus has released throughout the year. It arrives on November 8th through Matador Records.
“I don’t really like Christmas,” the singer said in a statement, before detailing how the cover came to life. “In the studio, we listened to the original of ‘Last Christmas’ and didn’t talk about an arrangement. I just told everyone to play it angry. This is what happened first take. It actually came out pretty fun, maybe a tad psychotic.”
