Little Simz reveals how she was “led by God” on new album, ‘Lotus’

Little Simz has opened up about her creative practice and mental health during the ongoing lawsuit with her former producer, Inflo, amid the pending release of her new album Lotus on June 6th.

In a new interview, the Mercury Prize-winning artist addressed her internal crisis as a result of the dispute with her once-friend. She made the claim in January against Inflo, real name Dean Cover, after allegedly not being paid back the money she loaned the producer. Her loan was to help the production of three albums she produced under the recording company Artists Without A Label (AWAL), which Cover encouraged her to sign so she could self-produce her music.

“I got to a point where I lost my sense of purpose,” she told Billboard. “I’m quite an introspective person, especially when it comes to my music,” she continued. “But this time around, it felt harder. Making this album felt like a real breakthrough.”

Simz revealed what truly got her through the difficult time: “I was led by God, my inner child and the Simz that was coming up and had this fire in her belly.”

The religious influence is evident in the lyrics from the opening track Lotus, with Simz reportedly rapping: “I’m lucky that I got out now, It’s a shame, I really feel sorry for your wife…This person I’ve known my whole life, coming like a devil in disguise.”

Meanwhile, the rapper said of the collapse of their relationship: “I was really frustrated and hurt, and I wanted to scream. But it’s tricky starting off on that foot sometimes.”

The rapper has not been shy about her relationship with religion in the past. On an Apple Music podcast, she revealed that she “speaks to God all the time.”

“I banter with God,” she continued, “it’s like my relationship with God is what it is, and it’s very personal to me. And same, I haven’t found a home in religion, but I do have a very strong sense of faith.”

Simz, who is set to curate this year’s Meltdown Festival, is set to release Lotus on June 6th. She will also headline Manchester’s Co-op Live and London’s O2 Arena later this year.
