Liam Gallagher reveals he called Noel to end 15-year Oasis feud
Liam Gallagher has revealed that he was the one responsible for reaching out to his brother, Noel Gallagher, to mend their relationship and reunite Oasis.
While there has been talk of Oasis reuniting on numerous occasions since they parted company acrimoniously in 2009, it took until August 28th, 2024, for the Gallagher brothers to officially bury the hatchet. That aforementioned date is now steeped into the rock history books and will be remembered as the day that Oasis answered the prayers of millions across the globe.
Demand for tickets has been unprecedented with 10million fans clambering for tickets when they went on general sale on August 30th with most left empty-handed. They will play 19 huge dates across the United Kingdom and Ireland next summer, including seven dates at London’s historic Wembley Stadium throughout 2025.
Now, taking to X, Liam has responded to a fan who asked whether it was him or Noel who made the call to initiate the comeback, claiming, “I called him but don’t tell anyone as I do t wont folk thinking I’m a soft lad and stuffs keep it between me n you cheers x”.
Although Liam’s posts on X should be taken with a pinch of salt, this does seem like the most likely outcome considering previous remarks by Noel, who told Talksport in 2023, “He should call me because he’s forever going on about it. You’d have thought by now that he’d have some kind of plan, and if he’s got a plan, he should get someone to call me. He doesn’t even have to speak to me, I know he won’t speak to me, he’s a coward.”
Seemingly, Noel attempted to call his younger brother’s bluff, adding, “The thing with Liam, you read these things every day that he’s saying, ‘It’s happening, it’s happening,’ so he gets people’s hopes up all over the world then I get asked about it and have to look like I’m dropping a big foot on it. Call me, call me, let’s see what you’ve got to say.”
Although Liam responded to these comments shortly afterwards during an interview on BBC Radio 2, and stated that it was up to Noel to reunite Oasis, telling Jo Whiley, “The way I see it, it ain’t happening. I won’t be calling him and he’ll be calling me. He split the band up on his terms and I’ll be getting it back together, on my terms. I’m a reasonable person, but I’m very good friends with the universe and we have ways of making it happen because it’ll come down to him calling me.”
12 months is a long time in the music industry, as the unexpected reformation of Oasis proves. However, ultimately, all it took was a simple phone call to bring the band back together, and if Liam is to be believed, he was the one who made the crucial step.
Why did Liam and Noel Gallagher start feuding?
Towards the end of their tour in 2009, Oasis abruptly called it a day following an altercation between the Gallagher brothers ahead of their headline performance at Rock En Seine in Paris. They withdrew from their set shortly before being due to take to the stage after Noel quit the band, and it was down to Bloc Party to inform the French crowd that Oasis were no more.
The incident backstage was the straw that broke the camel’s back and tension had been growing throughout the run of dates. Notably, the week before Rock En Seine, Oasis pulled out of their headline slot at V Festival, citing Liam’s bout of laryngitis, which Noel dismissed as a “hangover”.
Describing the physical confrontation in Paris, Noel once told Esquire: “He goes out the dressing room, for whatever reason, he went to his own dressing room, and he came back with a guitar, and he started wielding it like an axe, and I’m not fucking kidding.”
Noel went on to describe it as “a real unnecessary violent act” and claimed that Liam “nearly took my face off with” the weapon.
The guitarist then described the moment he realised that Oasis was over, recalling: “I was like, you know what? I’m fucking out of here. And at that point, someone came in and said five minutes!… I kind of got in the car, and I sat there for five minutes, and I just said fuck it, I can’t do it anymore.”
