Leonardo DiCaprio’s eclectic, random, and at times bizarre music taste: “I’m a big fan”
If you had to guess what kind of music Leonardo DiCaprio was into, what would you go for? It’s a tough one, right? Would it be something smooth and 1980s, perhaps a bit of yacht rock to go with that white Lamborghini Countach in The Wolf of Wall Street? Or some 1920s swing for doing the Charleston, perfect to go with his snappy suit in The Great Gatsby? Well, the truth is a lot more varied than that.
While rumours abound that he likes to stick on a bit of indie heroes MGMT when inviting a ‘lucky’ lady to his boudoir, the man himself has confirmed he’s partial to all kinds of music, saying just a couple of years back: “You know what, I have a range of musical love that goes back to our stuff from the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s with jazz and blues and things of that nature. And then hip-hop, too.”
In fact, his love of hip-hop is well documented. His friend Jay-Z produced the soundtrack for the aforementioned Great Gatsby and at the time DiCaprio enthused: “Kendrick Lamar is great, 2 Chainz is great too – don’t forget 2 Chainz.”
And DiCaprio would apparently listen to rap legend Eminem with Daniel Day-Lewis when the pair were getting ready to shoot Martin Scorsese’s bloody Gangs of New York back in 2002, especially the song ‘The Way I am’.
It’s certainly not all hip-hop for DiCaprio, though, as the Parasite actor Cho Yeo-jeong revealed after meeting him at a filming of Saturday Night Live. She said that he told her he was a fan of Korean boyband BTS, naming their tune ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’ as his favourite.
But why stop at multi-million-selling teen heartthrobs from the far East! Atlanta-based rap star J.I.D. can also claim to have DiCaprio as a fan, and the feeling is definitely mutual, seeing as the musician has released two mixtapes, named DiCaprio 1 and DiCaprio 2, respectively, with a third currently in development.
The rapper told of his brush with the actor when discussing him with A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip, revealing: “Q-Tip and Leo are like best friends and we was just sitting there [at his house] listening to DiCaprio 2 and he holds his phone in the air and he starts recording a video and was like, ‘Yo, I’m sitting here with J.I.D, he’s a really big fan of your movies.’ Then he put the camera on me and I was like, ‘I’m a big fan.’ Bro texts right back like, ‘Oh my God, I’mma check it out’ and then he asks if I was coming to his party or something like that because it was his birthday.
While it’s probably best to skip any association with shamed music mogul P Diddy, DiCaprio also appeared in the 2019 music video by Lil Dicky for his song ‘Earth’, which went viral and brought in much-needed cash for DiCaprio’s charitable foundation.
The environmentalist has taken a bit of a back seat from acting in recent years, instead focusing on producing the likes of the upcoming Martin Scorsese project The Devil in White City and a movie about the founding of original video game giants Atari.
Next month he will be seen in a lead role however, as Paul Thomas Anderson returns with the much-awaited One Battle After Another, DiCaprio leading a group of former revolutionaries to recapture a missing daughter.
