Laura Dern joins ‘The White Lotus’ season four following Helena Bonham-Carter’s exit
Laura Dern is set to head to the Cannes Film Festival, joining the cast of The White Lotus for its fourth series.
The Oscar-winning actor is set to replace Helena Bonham-Carter in the series, who pulled out of the cast last week over the vision for her character, according to reports.
However, Dern, who is a longtime friend and collaborator of the show’s creator and director, Mike White, is stepping into the comedy drama in her place, according to Deadline.
Per reports in the publication on April 28th, her role is being specifically developed and written for her by White, whom she previously worked with on the early 2010s HBO series Enlightened.
Earlier this month, it was announced that following The White Lotus’s tumultuous trip to Thailand for its third series last year, it will now be heading to Cannes to examine the life of stars at the famed film festival.
An official statement at the time said: “The fourth season will follow a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the span of a week, taking place during the Cannes Film Festival.”
Though the main location will be the Côte d’Azur, the season will also film in St. Tropez, Monaco, and Paris.
Filming for the series had already begun, at which point it had emerged that Bonham-Carter was no longer suitable for her role. However, the rest of the cast includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, and Nadia Tereszkiewicz.
It is being rounded out by Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustavsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Rosie Perez, Ben Schnetzer, and Laura Smet.
The recasting was the latest drama The White Lotus didn’t need for its fresh slate, following the previous series which was plagued by rumours of fighting within the cast, as well as White calling the show’s composer’s decision to quit a “bitch move”.
