Lana Del Rey explains true story behind new single ‘Bluebird’
Lana Del Rey offered up a surprise release on April 18th from her upcoming tenth studio album. The singer has now opened up about the real story behind the new single ‘Bluebird’, which stemmed from a real bird which hit her window.
Del Rey recorded a selfie video from her car to share the story with fans. “I had been seeing someone for a very long time, and we hadn’t seen each other for a while, and he called and he asked me if I wanted to go for a walk,” she said.
She continued: “I was kind of excited, but I didn’t think it was a very good idea. And I said yes, and I started getting dressed, and all of a sudden, a bird smacked in the double pane window doors of my bedroom, and I was shocked.”
The ‘Video Games’ singer then explained what followed: “I opened the little door and I saw this little I think it was like… little swallow right there. And I just was so emotional. Because, you know when you just know that, something is meant for you, like, sometimes I feel like nature has its own way of communicating with you, especially in extremely severe situations.”
Lyrics included in the single came to her organically in this moment of earthly communication. She kneeled down to the bird, picked it up to hold it graciously, and Del Rey started to sing. “Little bird, bluebird / Fly away for both of us.”
“I kept singing, and it did eventually kind of stumble away and dizzily flew up onto the little podium that there was there,” Del Rey recounted.
Despite the profound impact this event had on her, the singer did not heed the warning from the animal. She ended up going on the walk with the person she had been seeing. “I didn’t really like [how] the walk led to more years of confusion,” she added.
With this extra context, it appears that on ‘Bluebird‘, Del Rey sings to both herself and the bird she nurtured momentarily, in lyrics such as “Find some strength inside my hand / Anything to let you sing goodbye.”
Del Rey concluded the video by sharing that there have been other times birds have personally communicated a “little bit of a message for me.” Her father, Robert Grant, left a comment on the post, writing: “Love that story! And you have many more involving owls & other critters that have messages & meaning!”
This marks two singles from her upcoming, untitled album. She previously released ‘Henry, Come On’ on April 11th, though the album’s release date remains a mystery.
