Josh Homme and Dave Gahan to appear at Mark Lanegan tribute show in London
A special tribute concert to the late Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan will take place at London’s Roundhouse on December 5th, featuring guests including Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan and The Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde.
Lanegan first came to prominence as the vocalist of the early grunge band Screaming Trees. His gravelly voice was one of the most distinctive of the era, as typified by the band’s classics, such as ‘Nearly Lost You’ and ‘Dollar Bill’. Famously, the former featured on the soundtrack for the classic Cameron Crowe movie Singles, which featured other grunge stars.
Although Screaming Trees didn’t disband until 2000, Lanegan also kicked off his solo career when performing with them. His revered debut, The Winding Sheet, arrived in 1990. In total, Lanegan released ten more solo records across his career.
The late rock figure had several other musical projects, too. The most famous was undoubtedly his stint at as a full-time member of Homme’s Queens of the Stone Age, between 2001 and 2005, for both Songs for the Deaf and Lullabies to Paralyse.
He also featured on a handful of tracks on the band’s 2000 sophomore effort, Rated R. Lanegan and Homme became close friends after the latter joined Screaming Trees as touring guitarist from 1996 to 1998 before leaving to form Queens of the Stone Age.
Other notable Lanegan collaborations include his work in The Gutter Twins with Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli, as well as his partnership with Isobel Campbell, and collaborations with Soulsavers.
On February 22nd, 2022, Lanegan passed away at the age of 57 at his home in the Irish town of Killarney. No cause of death was revealed.
At ‘Mark Lanegan – A Celebration’, major collaborators from his career, such as Homme, Dulli and Soulsavers, will feature on a night paying tribute to their late friend by playing his songs. Joining them will be other close companions he made throughout his life, including Gahan, Hynde, Bobby Gillespie, Alison Mosshart, and Duke Garwood. Soulsavers will be the night’s house band, with Troy Van Leeuwen, Aldo Struyf and others sitting in throughout.
Greg Dulli said of the upcoming show: “What a wonderful night this will be. Singing his songs and sharing stories of our dear friend in a much-deserved celebration of his life and music.”
More guests are set to be announced shortly. Tickets for the Mark Langean tribute show go on sale at 10am on October 1st with the evening presented by the Mark Lanegan Foundation and Kilimanjaro Live.
The music world’s reaction to Mark Lanegan’s death
After the news of Lanegan’s death broke, tributes poured in from across the musical world as people paid respects to a widely influential artist, who made a mark with his genre-transcending work. Not only this, but his down-to-earth personality was also a common theme.
Peter Hook of Joy Division and New Order shared on social media, “Mark Lanegan was a lovely man. He led a wild life that some of us could only dream of. He leaves us with fantastic words and music! Thank god that through all of that he will live forever. RIP Mark. Sleep well. Love Hooky. X”
Elsewhere, fellow grunge star Eddie Vedder, the vocalist of Pearl Jam, paid tribute to Lanegan during a show in grunge’s spiritual home of Seattle. The ‘Even Flow’ singer’s touching tribute materialised during a concert at Benaroya Hall, when he expressed his immense sadness about his late friend.
“I got here about four o’clock and all of a sudden my body started shaking a little bit,” he told the audience. “I started to feel really terrible and I think it was because I was having an allergic reaction to sadness. Because we lost… there’s a guy called Mark Lanegan. You know, there are a lot of really great musicians, some people know Seattle because of the musicians that have come out of the great Northwest.”
