Johnny Marr shares new single ‘Ophelia’
Johnny Marr has teased his latest album with the release of the new single, ‘Ophelia’.
The propulsive new track is the second single to be released, following ‘Spin’, from his forthcoming album, The Age Of Everything, set for release on October 2nd through BMG.
On ‘Ophelia’, Marr asks, “Who will come to play? Who will come your way?”
Speaking about the track, the former Smiths guitarist shared, “The character of Ophelia is confounding but there’s a real nobility and strength which reminds me of someone in my life. So the name just stuck and sounded like a song.”
Marr added, “I thought about the character and I saw quite a few similarities with the Ophelia. As a songwriter, sometimes these things happen where it just sings really well over the track and you go with it. It turned out right.”
In total, The Age of Everything encompasses ten tracks, which Marr developed live on the road across the East Coast of North America while on tour before taking them home to Manchester and recording them in his studio.
While ‘Ophelia’ hasn’t been performed live by Marr this summer, he did include it on his setlists at several shows in 2025 across Europe and the US, as he was in the process of creating The Age of Everything.
Upon announcing the album, Marr said in a statement, “This is the record that’s been the most cathartic. The title came to me early in the process and became an inescapable idea.”
He added of the message that he hopes it emits, “It seemed to sum up the way I think a lot of people are feeling. It’s all encompassing, but it’s not necessarily a negative statement. There’s a sense of overwhelm in the culture brought about by technology, but looking at it with a different light, there could also be a sense of possibility.”
Earlier this week, Marr postponed the biggest headline show of his solo career at Wembley Arena on October 24th, which coincided with the album release.
As it stands, he has no UK dates announced. However, in November, he will be performing at Primavera in Chile and Corona Capital in Mexico City.
