Johnny Depp returns at Comic-Con as ‘Ebenezer’ ahead of new trailer
Johnny Depp has returned to smite the masses as Ebenezer Scrooge in the latest Paramount remake of A Christmas Carol.
Depp stole the show at Comic-Con on July 23rd, where he surprised attendees with an appearance in full costume in a faux 1880s British Christmas village built in San Diego’s Gaslamp area.
The 63-year-old actor shuffled about with his cane, mumbling to himself. He even responded to a callout from the crowd after an attendee shouted, “Good day to you, Mr. Scrooge.” He responded in full character, “What’s so good about it?”
The method acting comes ahead of the Ti West-directed movie, Ebenezer, which will hit cinemas on November 13th.
The first trailer for the retelling of the classic story has been released, largely focusing on the man at the centre of it all.
“He brought us Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and the Mad Hatter… This Thanksgiving, the master of misfits,” bold red text appearing throughout the trailer reads.
Throughout the trailer, Depp’s character is flummoxed by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, as he “bah-humbug’s” plenty of supporting characters played by the likes of Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, and Ian McKellen.
This dark, gothic reimagining of the Christmas classic marks the actor’s major Hollywood studio comeback, Depp’s first studio film since 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Depp notably lost a libel action brought against The Sun in 2020 over claims that he had assaulted his former wife, Amber Heard; two years on, he won a hugely publicised defamation case against her in relation to physical and sexual assault claims.
In 2025, he hit the headlines again after claiming he had “no regrets” about the trial, adding, “I was pre-MeToo. I was like a crash test dummy for MeToo. It was before Harvey Weinstein. And I sponged it, took it all in.”
