‘John Wick 5’ director promises new movie will be “really different”

The plot of John Wick 5 will offer a new take on the famous character, promises director Chad Stahelski.

In a new discussion with Empire, Stahleski promised the fifth instalment will be “really different”, as the storyline continued through the first four films has reached its natural conclusion.

The director prognosticated great things to come, saying, “The only way to do a [fifth film] is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It’s not a continuation with the High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy fuck… I gotta see that.’”

It isn’t just the fifth movie continuing the Wick universe. Ballerina, a John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas, will be released on June 6th, 2025. This new movie is set between John Wick 3 and John Wick 4, which allows Keanu Reeves to return as Wick in Ballerina despite the conclusive ending of the last film in the series.

Additionally, the Under The High Table television series continues within the universe, as does an animated prequel film about Wick leaving his full-time assassin role. According to Stahelski, these projects will play an important role in setting up the John Wick 5 narrative.

He expanded: “Our idea is to try some things and explore some threads and use those two properties to catapult us forward into the ideas for ‘John 5.’”

Despite this news, Reeves made headlines earlier this year as he denied any further Wick movies. During an interview with ComicBook, Reeves commented: “You know, the character’s dead. He died in John Wick: Chapter 4. I know, in Hollywood you can…I know, I know, it’s the Hollywood story. Right now, there isn’t [any plans for a return].”
