Hugh Grant admits new Bridget Jones movie is “very sad”
British actor Hugh Grant has warned fans that the fourth instalment of the beloved Bridget Jones film series is actually quite sad. Despite being known as an all-time favourite chick-flick comedy character, the upcoming return to the world of Miss Jones is set to be a more emotional affair.
In the latest instalment, due out on February 14th, 2025, Grant reprises his role of Daniel Cleaver, Bridget Jones’ former flame from the original movie and the sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. In the third film, Bridget Jones’ Baby, it was assumed that the character of Cleaver was dead, but that proved not be the case as he’s set to make a comeback in the new movie.
The fourth film is adapted from Helen Fielding’s novel Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, following Jones as she becomes a single mother following the death of Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth. Renée Zellweger returns as the titular character but is now joined by One Day star Leo Woodall as her new love interest, as well as Grant.
However, according to Grant, the typically laugh-a-minute film series is set to take a more serious and sombre tone in the new instalment. “It is a good and moving script – it is extremely funny but very sad,” he said on the Graham Norton Show.
Grant also admitted that he was “crammed in” to the script as there was “no obvious role” for his character. He revealed, “So we didn’t have a 60-year-old Daniel Cleaver wandering around looking at young girls, I made up a good interim story for him.”
So far, very little is known about the film. The production team and studio have remained tight-lipped about how closely the movie will follow the plot of the book. While all the other films have stuck to the story set out in Fielding’s novels, there has been some creative license taken. So no one truly knows what the character of Bridget Jones will be getting up to in the 2025 films.
The only thing set in stone is the cast list with fans already excited to see some favourite faces making a return with Zellweger and Grant returning to their iconic characters, along with Sally Phillips and Shirley Henderson as Jones’ best friends, Shazzer and Jude. The addition of Woodall also has people intrigued to see what the addition of a new toy boy love interest means for the plot.
