Renée Zellweger set to return for new ‘Bridget Jones’ movie

Bridget Jones has one more adventure in her yet, as Working Title and Universal Pictures have finally confirmed the handful of talent returning for the fourth film instalment, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.

The fourth part of the romantic comedy series will see Renée Zellweger return as the notorious yet beloved titular role, alongside original cast member Hugh Grant, who will be reprising the mischievous Daniel Cleaver.

Emma Thompson, who featured in the preceding Bridget Jones’s Baby, will be making a comeback appearance in Mad About the Boy, alongside various newcomers like Chiwetel Ejiofor and White Lotus’ Leo Woodall.

The new movie will be helmed by Michael Morris, known for directing his debut To Leslie in 2022, alongside selected episodes of 13 Reasons Why and Better Call Saul, with a script written by Helen Fielding, writer of the original best-selling 2013 novel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fielding will also be executive producing the project alongside Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Jo Wallett through Working Title Films.

Bridget Jones’s Baby depicted our loveable main character experiencing several ups and downs as she accidentally gets pregnant without knowing who the father is.

Despite the obvious messy implications of such a situation, Jones finds herself wrapped up in a happy ending, starting life with Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy. The fourth movie will likely provide a glimpse into Jones’ next chapter, complete with all of the same mishaps that keep the series appealing.

The original novel, Mad About the Boy, saw Jones experience the joys and difficulties of living life as a widowed 51-year-old single mother. Whether the movie follows the same narrative is uncertain, but whatever happens, it is guaranteed that there will be lots of laughs along the way.

Zellweger first appeared as Jones in 2001’s Bridget Jones’s Diary, alongside Grant and Firth as pivotal parts of the love triangle.

While the trio also returned for the sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, only Firth returned for the third instalment, Bridget Jones’s Baby, after Grant’s Cleaver reportedly died in a plane crash. At the end of the film, however, Cleaver is said to have been found alive, offering fans hope that Grant will one day reprise his role.

The trilogy has been immensely popular, earning Zellweger an Oscar nomination for best actress and achieving more $760million at the box office.

The forthcoming movie, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, is appropriately slated for release on Valentine’s Day 2025.
