Hayley Williams says David Byrne “helped me through a confusing time in my life”
Hayley Williams has opened up on her friendship with David Byrne, saying he “helped me through a confusing time in my life”.
The singer was appearing on a new episode of the One Life One Chance podcast with Toby Morse, where, during a hugely wide-ranging interview, she began to discuss her connection with Byrne and how their collaborative partnership blossomed.
Speaking about the recent release of The Twits on Netflix, where she and the Talking Heads frontman worked together on the soundtrack, Williams said: “I can’t believe David Byrne asked me to do that,” before going on to explain how they met.
Revealing that she met him for the first time after Byrne came backstage at a Paramore show at Madison Square Garden in New York, the singer added: “Then he called me out of nowhere, about a year ago now, to be a part of this soundtrack, and then I ended up singing on one of his songs.”
Referring to the song ‘What Is the Reason for It?’ from Byrne’s latest studio album, Who Is the Sky?, Williams noted how this new partnership came at a time when she was making the integral transition from being the leader of her band to a solo artist in her own right.
“He really helped me through, I think, a confusing time in my life,” she explained, before adding: “It’s kind of wild that someone I look up to like that was a part of helping me find myself in a new way.”
As such, Williams has recently launched her newest band Power Snatch alongside her longtime collaborator Daniel James, sharing their first three singles. A track called ‘DMs’ is currently available via Bandcamp.
However, the fledgling group is unlikely to put on any live days in the foreseeable future, as Williams is set to embark on her own solo tour for her most recent album, Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party, in the coming months.
The singer is set to visit London, Manchester, and Glasgow while on tour this June, but will kick off her American leg in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 27th.
