Grammys 2024: Joni Mitchell to perform at ceremony
Despite reigning as one of folk’s most prominent artists for decades, Joni Mitchell will be performing at the Grammys for the first time on February 4th in Los Angeles.
The artist’s first Grammy win dates back to 1969 when she won ‘Best Folk Performance’ for her second album, Clouds. Over the years, Mitchell has been nominated 18 times, winning nine awards at the prestigious ceremony.
Mitchell last won a Grammy in 2022 after releasing Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963–1967). She subsequently won ‘Best Historical Album’, beating off competition from esteemed artists such as Marian Anderson and Prince.
At the upcoming 66th Annual Grammy Awards, Mitchell will perform in conjunction with her nomination for ‘Best Folk Album’. Her 2023 release Joni Mitchell at Newport, her first live performance in eight years, has been nominated for the coveted prize.
The album was also her first appearance at the legendary folk festival since 1969 and featured collaborations with musicians like Marcus Mumford, Shooter Jennings, Brandi Carlisle and Wynonna Judd.
Mitchell will be competing against artists like Paul Simon, Rufus Wainwright, Don Flemons and The Milk Carton Kids.
The singer’s first-ever Grammy performance was announced by the Recording Academy on Twitter, who wrote: “Don’t miss nine-time GRAMMY winner and past MusiCares Person of the Year Joni Mitchell’s first-ever Grammys performance! Tune-in to CBS on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT.”
Meanwhile, Trevor Noah was recently confirmed to host the 2024 edition of the Grammys. The upcoming ceremony will mark the fourth consecutive year that he will be in charge of presenting the prestigious event.
Noah made the announcement on his podcast. He told listeners, “I think it’s also important to acknowledge something, I’m hosting the Grammy’s. I’m excited about that, yeah, it’s a lot of fun. I enjoy the Grammys because I get to watch the show in person and then experience and comment on it in person while it is happening.”
