Glenn Powell and Judd Apatow to team up for movie about country singer

Glenn Powell and Judd Apatow are set to team up for a movie about a country and western singer in disarray. Powell will star, and Apatow will direct the new, untitled offering.

The pair are also set to pen the script together, about a country western singer who is spiralling out of control. Universal Pictures are reportedly fast-tracking the original feature, which is one of many projects that Powell is currently involved in.

Apatow will produce on behalf of Apatow Productions through its long-standing overall deal with the studio. On the other hand, Powell and Dan Cohen are set to produce for Barnstorm via the first-look deal with Universal that was signed earlier this year.

Powell’s sharp rise to fame has seemed almost instantaneous, but it has been a slow, gradual climb over many years. In 2024, he starred in the box-office hit Twisters and the Netflix favourite Hit Man, which he also produced and co-wrote. He also just finished production on the revenge thriller Huntington for A24.

The actor will also star in Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man. The original film follows Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character taking part in a game show where convicted criminals are hunted down by professional killers, with the original being directed by Paul Michael Glaser. Powell told the audience at Cinemacon that the film was “the hardest thing I’ve done in my life”. This project will be released on November 7th.

Powell was thrust in the mainstream limelight when he co-starred with America’s sweetheart, Sydney Sweeney, on the romantic comedy, Anyone But You, which broke records for the genre upon its cinematic release.

No further information about the new movie from Apatow and Powell has been released.
